Where Motherhood Meets Media and Modern Wisdom

What I’m Learning From Music Artists, Actresses, and Business Women While Navigating This New Chapter

Mother’s Day Weekend Reflection

Anyone who follows me at this point already knows that music, along with TV and film, isn’t just an interest of mine. They’re sources of inspiration that spill into my real life. And that inspiration touches every part of my existence, including my newest role as a mother.

It’s common, especially in the Black community, to lean on the wisdom and lived experiences of elders when navigating motherhood. That guidance will always be valuable. But if I’m being honest, I’ve also learned a lot from interviews with my favorite entertainers, actors, and musicians. The gems they drop, the way they speak about balance, identity, and parenting, resonate in a different but equally meaningful way.

A More Modern Lens on Motherhood

Motherhood comes in ALL shapes and forms, and ALL of them are valid. My wife and I are leaning into something that feels a bit more progressive and modern. That perspective is often reflected in the advice shared by women who are older than us but not quite in our parents’ generation. There’s a relatability there—a bridge between tradition and evolution.

And in this season, it feels like we’ve been surrounded by an abundance of that kind of guidance. Passive gems, real-life reflections, and honest conversations from Black women entertainers we admire who are also mothers. Whether intentional or not, their words have landed, and we’ve been holding onto quite a few of them.

A Couple of Motherhood Gems We’re Carrying With Us

Below are a few clips that have stuck with us. The kind of advice you don’t just hear but actually sit with. The kind you plan to carry forward and integrate into your own journey.

Jill Scott on Million Dollaz Worth of Game Ep. 357, teaching her son lessons from The Cosby Show about the value of work by demonstrating what life looks like without the benefits and privileges that working provides 👏🏾

A lot of parenting is helping children connect actions to outcomes in ways they can actually understand and remember.

Jayda Cheaves on GOAT Talk Live at Clark Atlanta, also teaching her son the value of work through demonstration by having him watch her at work.

People underestimate how much children absorb just from witnessing consistency, discipline, and ambition in real time.

Nia Long on Baby, This is Keke Palmer speaking on the importance of pouring back into yourself while pouring into your children as they grow, mature, and become more self-sufficient… along with maintaining your aesthetic appeal as motherhood evolves 👏🏾

A conversation a lot more women need to hear because motherhood should never require you to completely abandon yourself in the process.

Our FIRST Mother’s Day, A Different Kind of Feeling

Those are just a few gems we’ve discovered in recent months from entertainers and businesswomen we both admire as we continue navigating this new chapter of motherhood together 🫶🏾

Again, this is our first Mother’s Day, and it goes without saying, it hits different. When you’re finally in the driver’s seat, when you fully understand what motherhood requires mentally, emotionally, and physically, it gives you a completely different level of respect for the role.

So today, I just want to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms doing the hardest and most beautiful work there is. Raising a whole human is no small task.

Give yourself grace. Truly. You’re probably doing much better than you think or feel.

And just know, we’re ALL in this together 🤎
